A texture tutorial and GIVEAWAY!!! (a day of firsts)

So you know how I mentioned in a previous post that being on the gauche alchemy team has really been taking me out of my comfort zone?  Well one of the ways they have done this is by encouraging me to share some tutorials.  The reason this is such a stretch for me isn't because I'm uncomfortable with sharing, I really don't mind that part.
First of all, really??? What can I teach you guys?  Most of you are well established scrappers and I look to you for tips, and technique how to's.  Plus, most of my techniques have been discovered through many screw ups!  So usually I have no clue how I get from point A to point B...it just kinda happens?!

I am very glad that GA encouraged me to do some tutorials though, because having to make step by step instructions has made me realize that there is a little more to this particular technique than just slapping some modeling paste over a stencil...although...not really a whole lot more! lol

Check out the tutorial here.

OHHHH!!...and I almost forgot! I'm also having my first giveaway!!!

Here we have a sampling of the AWESOME!!!! punchinella from Gauche Alchemy...seriously!?!...I love my punchinella!!! and there is no doubt in my mind that you will too!  BUT WAIT!!!  That's not it....You also get my favorite Crafters Workshop Template (the daisy cluster), as well as a chevron, and mariposa template!!!

(Quick shout out to Susanna for the best customer service ever!  Because I had ordered 2 of some of the templates she actually called me, to make sure that I didn't make a mistake!  How cool is that?)

All you have to do to get your hands on these yummy texture tools, is make sure you are a follower...and leave me a comment telling me how you like to use stencils?! Do you use paint? Modeling paste? Mists? Chalk? Ink?....something I've never heard of?

That's it! Simple as that!  I will randomly choose a winner either by random.org...or one of my cuties drawing form a hat on the 31st!

International entries welcome!

So whatcha waiting for????

Misty, I absolutley love your work! you are just such an amazing artist and YOU push ME to go out of my comfort zone and just try different things. so thank you for that! You look pretty comfortable in whatever artistic zone you are in LOL. I love my templates. I use them with misting, ink and sometimes even stencil with a pen. They are always by my side when I scrap. I love this technique, also love to use impasto with my stencils as you can add acrylic paint to it and it keeps its colour, have been known to tap an inkpad over them especially embossing ink and embossing the image, misting of course, occassionally tracing and fussy cuttin elements. stencils are so versatile and such fun to play with. Love art supplies that are re usable as they are also economical

First, I didn't know how I wasn't already following your blog- I saw the picture of the templates a second ago in your sb.com gallery-

I just got my SECOND template ever, last weekend! I'm in love with these things!

I've only used them with inks, so far- I haven't even tried to mist with them, yet. And I don't have any chalks yet- am I that primitive?!

I want to win! lol

p.s. your blog is wonderful. I'm gonna catch up, now! later!

I think you have a TON of skills that people would love to learn about! Personally, you're the reason I went out and bought modeling paste! :D I love that you're out of your comfort zone creatively, a whole new world opens up! I've been pushing myself out too and it's amazing what I've learned already (like your awesome tutorial at GA) :D

Your journal looks great. Im looking forward to looking at your gallery to see your work. I joined scrapbook.com last month so I dont have a lot of experience. I enjoy misting, stamping, embossing , fussy cutting, putting things together to create a layout. I like to do different things that I havent seen in the various layouts online.

What a fabulous giveaway. I am drooling over all those awesome stencils. I honestly don't have have many stencils and would love to try out your awesome techniques in your tut. I do however, like using bubble wrap as a stamp, after applying mists.

hi Misty! Love that jourrnal; mixed media type projects are still a little out of my comfort zone, but I've been getting braver and playing with some different "stuff"! I use paint, chalk and mist with stencils and masks, although I have plans to play with some modelling paste soon!

Anonymous said...

Is this all I need to be as talented as you are?!! lol, I doubt it! I love trying new techniques but still pretty new to all of this. So far I've tried misting, inking and gesso with different masks. It's so much fun to alter the paper and then tear it up!!!
I can only post anonymous for some reason but it's Rochelle (Cricut OCD) Love your blog!

Cheryl said...

Seriously??! :-D your tute is great! and whaaat? I never saw the chevron pattern when i was lookin! x

Stencils are my way of adding special touches. Modeling paste leaves a wonderful texture, ink is so much fun to add an interest here and there. These are what I have used so far and am ready to work on some other ideas. Thanks for the inpiration.

maxell said...

Misty! Comfort zones are not for rebels... so just go, do and like it! Then you tell the world about your insights and a lot will be learned. Way to go!

Stencils? Mostly used for great graffiti art or - if you prefer - street bombing... ;) Also used for scrapping and art making in general. What to use with it? Anything that give structure and/or color. Or that's at least how I use them.

Cindy Gay said...

I would use texture past or a walnut ink.

Hi Mistmeister!
Well I never! OF COURSE you have TONS to teach us!
1. Being a fearless experimenter. You would be amazed at how many people simply stick to what they know and rarely stray. Even I have just started using the modeling paste and guess what? It's because YOU inspired it! I've been meaning to do it for MONTHS but it just seemed so scary and messy. I LOVING how it looks!
2. How to mix colors!
3. How to be awesome so people will come to your blog. :)
Please stop selling yourself short- you are amazing!
LOVE this art journal cover- the color- the texture- it's awesome!
SO.GLAD. you are a Gauche chick!
PS- not entering the give away- just wanted to boost a fellow crafty chica.

I find tutorials hard to do because I'm not a systematic/linear kind of scrapper. But through creating tutorials, I have found more efficient and new ways of using techniques that I enjoy....so keep at it! You have an amazing style and people are always interested in incorporating textures on their projects. I want to learn from you!

I love using stencils with texture paste along with mists and inks. The outcome is always different depending on how I've applied the paste or the direction that I mist.

Pamela said...

I have always used Tattered Angels Spray Mist or Tim Holtz Distress Inks with my stencils but have recently discovered some new techniques I'm dying to try. Thanks for the chance.

Lis said...

An awesome tutorial, thanks so much for sharing, I never thought to use moulding paste with stencils, it looked fantastic.
I have only used my stencils with paint on scrapbook pages and in my art journal just the other day I used it with oil pastel and water colour paints.

I have been trying to get into art journaling for almost two months now, only to have everything look like a three-year-old threw it together. Then, I discovered stencils, and BAM! Suddenly, it worked, and I actually made a page that I absolutely LOVE. The problem is, I am not an artist, and while I make lovely backgrounds, I cannot draw and so my focal images always came out looking like stupid stick figures. But with the stencils, suddenly it doesn't matter that I can't draw. Soooo, I was in search of new stencils, and ideas how to use them, when I came upon your blog, which I consider very serendipitous! Thanks so much for the chance to win the stencils. To this non-artist, they would be better than Christmas!!!!

I like you tutorial!
and ... omg what a treasures!!
how I use things like that? generally with paint, modeling paste for acrylic paint, or with mists. I like making negative of pattern... at first use that like usual and next - stamp with "dirty" stencil :D how cool is that? you have differential effect and not wasting the medias :D

Lillian Child said...

Oh my goodness. I just recently discovered the mixed media journaling frenzie and I have been pulled into it like Dorothy pulled into OZ ... my world went from black and white to COLOR in an instant. I only have one stencil (Donna Downey) and have been using pan pastels to create some really lovely notecards. I am also just starting to dabble in canvas projects and would LOVE to be the lucky winner of your generous giveaway event. I am now a follower of your blog - so very nice to meet you! Please drop over to my blog sometime and give me a shout out! http://lillianchild.blogspot.com

I'm barely making the deadline, aren't I? I became a follower. I've never used stencils, but plan on trying them out soon. I want to decorate 2 12x12 canvases that will go behind some glassware in my china cabinet. I think the 2 shelves currently get lost in the dark depths of the cabinet & need some brightening.
